Day Two Hundred Seventy-Three Notes

1001 Miles was featured on NPR radio today!

Well, actually 1,001 Miles and one of its Notes from the Road were referenced on a topical call in show on OPB radio (Oregon Public Broadcasting) called Think Out Loud which is hosted by Emily Harris and David Miller. In its own words, Think Out Loud is "a daily show about politics and global issues, music and sports, books and the environment—anything and everything that can sustain an energetic hour of live, unscripted conversation. And, crucially, we're a web site that feeds into—and off of—that radio conversation."

Given Oregon's rich track and field tradition and the fact that the Olympic track and field trials are to occur at the University of Oregon this weekend, Think Out Loud decided to devote a show to Oregon running titled "Oregon Runs Wild." When I heard about this upcoming show shortly after completing my three miles this morning while ironing my clothes for work, I hurried to the computer and created a post on the Think Out Loud website's blog shamelessly promoting 1,001 Miles.

I was at work when I received a call from Lauren, informing me 1,001 Miles had been mentioned and a segment from one of these Notes from the Road had been read on air. You can listen to the excerpt by clicking the play arrow on the player below:

Day Two Hundred Seventy-One Notes

I love my job. I really do. I am not just writing this because my boss generously donated to 1,001 Miles and might read my notes from time to time. I learn something every day at work. I am encouraged to be creative. I am contributing to rapid and exciting change. I am trusted to make sound decisions. I have teammates that are as committed to excelence as I am. For these things, I am grateful.

Today was my first day back at work after a two and a half week leave. It was my first day not spent with or nearby my newborn son. It was my first day not caring for his mother, as she mends. I was the first one to break up our new number five, to leave just four, to separate from the rest and be on my own, if only for eight plus hours. As much as I love my job, as important as it is to me to contribute, to be of service, to help move us forward, I did not want to be there today, because I knew that it would not matter how much I pride myself on being responsible, on being reliable. I knew that it would take me a short while to transition, to want to be there, to care as much as I want to, as much as I need to. Having experienced two previous first days, I did not panic. I knew that although it would not happen right away, it would happen; I would return to my regular speed soon. Until then, I watched. I observed. I took it all in. A temporary outsider, hiding out until I could give what is expected of me, until I could give what I expect of myself.
